Yukon and Alaska

Alaska is a territory of immense beauty and startling contrasts: sweeping glaciers feed turquoise green lakes, towering mountains frame open vistas of orange moss tundra, grizzly bears casually fish for salmon along raging rivers. Experience this magnificent wilderness that travels into Yukon on a vacation package with like-minded explorers led by an Alaska adventure travel guide. Hike through four national parks beneath the highest mountain ranges in the world; travel the Dalton highway to the vastness of the Arctic Circle and finish your trip with a well-deserved relaxing soak in natural hot springs.

ITINERARY

Day 1 - Kluane National Park
The Yukon and Alaska tour begins in Whitehorse, which is just a short two hour drive from Kluane National Park. Travel west along the Alaska Highway and through Kluane National Park, reaching the Sheep Mountain trailhead in the late morning. Your guide leads you on an active Alaska half-day hike up Sheep Mountain, which provides great views and is an area where wildlife is frequently spotted.

Day 2 - Kluane National Park - Tok
This morning brings the option of Whitewater rafting on the Tatashenshini River or a hike in Kluane National Park. After lunch you set out for Tok, Alaska. Stop for a short hike to Soldier's Summit, where the formal opening of Alaska Highway was staged. Visit the Teslin Wildlife Museum after you cross over the border. Arrive in Tok in the late in the afternoon.

Days 3 & 4 - McCarthy – Wrangell
Your group reaches the town of McCarthy, an important stop on any Klondike tour, via a gravel road that was once an old railway bed. Make a number of stops along the route, including the abandoned super structures of railway bridges. Set up camp, then head out to explore the village of McCarthy. On Day 3, your Alaska vacation continues with an option to go for a guided glacier ice-walk on the Root Glacier or, for the more adventurous, try ice climbing. Later, explore the old copper mine of Kennicott and go for a hike in the Wrangell - St. Elias Preserve. Keep your eyes peeled for grizzly bears in this area!

Days 5 & 6 - Valdez
Valdez is located on the north shore of Port Valdez, a deep water fjord in Prince William Sound. The Richardson Highway, Alaska's first road, passes through the stunning scenery of the Chugach Mountains. You will stop to visit Keystone Canyon as you travel to Valdez. On Day 5 of your tour you have the opportunity to do a cruise in Prince William Sound or try some great sea kayaking accompanied by your Alaska adventure travel guide among the glaciers and “iceberg bits” known as “burgies.”

Days 7, 8 & 9- Denali National Park
Spend the next day of your tour driving the scenic Denali Highway. This single lane gravel road parallels two spectacular mountain ranges, the Chugach and the Alaskan, and has views of sweeping glaciers, vast tundra, and abundant wildlife. It’s a sightseeing tour in its own right. Stop at McClaren Summit (1,245m) and the Tangle Lakes for hiking, canoeing, or a picnic. Later, visit the information centre at Denali National Park and pick up your park and bus tickets. On Day 8, spend a full day exploring the vastness and true wilderness of Denali National Park. Day 9 is your chance to add an optional activity so you don’t miss out on anything in the park - hiking, flightseeing and whitewater rafting are popular options.

Day 10 & 11 - Chena Hot Springs
Leave Denali behind and travel to the scenic resort of Chena Hot Springs. The tour includes entrance to Chena Hot Springs, where you can enjoy a soak after your nights of camping. These mineral based hot springs include two indoor whirlpools and large swimming pool, and a large outdoor rock lake pool and whirlpool. Optional activities include bike and ATV rentals, horseback riding, or pampering yourself at the resort with a relaxing massage.

Day 12 - Delta Junction
After leaving the Chena Hot Springs, the group will make its way to Fairbanks to visit the downtown area and the University of Alaska. Following a tour of Fairbanks, drive east to Delta Junction - the official ending of the Alaska Highway.

Day 13 - Dawson City, Yukon
Via the “Top of the World Highway,” you reach the Klondike tour gold rush boomtown of Dawson City. Visit the abandoned Gold Dredge #4, pan for gold, or enjoy the nightlife at Diamond Tooth Gertie’s Gambling Saloon. You have free time to explore local hiking trails, a sternwheeler graveyard, the Palace Grand Hotel, Gaslight Follies, and the Klondike Goldrush Museum. Camp for the night overlooks the Yukon River and Dawson City.

Day 14 - Whitehorse, Yukon
On the final day of the Alaska tour the group will leave Dawson City and make their way south to Whitehorse. At Moose Creek Lodge, an original roadhouse built during the gold rush years, visit an authentic trapper's cabin. Also, stop at Five Finger Rapids for a short hike down to the Yukon River, where dangerous rapids made it difficult for the sternwheelers to plough the waters. The Yukon and Alaska tour finishes as you arrive in Whitehorse at approximately 5:00 PM.
